Greensboro, NC -- A Greensboro police officer who was seriously injured after her cruiser hit a tree while pursuing another vehicle will undergo surgery Friday afternoon.
The Greensboro Police Department said police officer EC Clodfelter was in pursuit of a car that was traveling the wrong direction on West Wendover Avenue near Spring Garden Street early Friday morning before 1:30 a.m.
Investigators said 24-year-old Keith Aaron Hammond crossed the median on West Wendover Avenue, traveling in the correct direction, but began to accelerate. Officer Clodfelter put on her emergency lights.
Clodfelter hit a tree in the median by Rollins Street around 1:34 a.m. Investigators said Hammond made a u-turn and began traveling westbound on Wendover Avenue. However, he didn't get too far as Guilford County Sheriff's deputies stepped in to help, deploying stop sticks on Wendover Avenue near Cridland Avenue.
Hammond's vehicle came to a stop near Battleground Avenue where he jumped out and ran. Greensboro police K9 and patrol units later arrested him.
Hammond is charged with Driving While Impaired, Fleeing to Elude Arrest, Felony Serious Injury by Vehicle, and Resist, Delay and Obstructing a Law Enforcement Officer. He is held in the Greensboro Jail on a $25,000 bond.
