Raleigh, NC -- The North Carolina General Assembly did away with class-size limits for most public school grades two years ago. Now some legislators want to end similar requirements for classrooms in the earliest grades.

The Senate Education Committee on Wednesday endorsed a bill to eliminate a requirement that class sizes in kindergarten through third grade be directly linked to what school districts receive from the state to hire teachers. Districts would have flexibility to spend the money as it sees fits to maximize student achievement.

Bill sponsor Sen. Jerry Tillman of Randolph County says lawmakers should leave it to local school leaders to decide how large classrooms should be. The change would reverse efforts last decade by Gov. Mike Easley to reduce class sizes in early grades.
