Burlington, NC-- An organization in Alamance County relies on volunteers to meet sexual assault victims right after their attack.

CrossRoads Sexual Assault Response and Resource Center is located in Burlington. The organization consists of 31 volunteers, from stay at home moms, business women, teachers and college students.

The volunteers work for the 24/7 Crisis Line that is always available to anyone needing help after a sexual assault circumstance. The volunteers rotate on 12-hour shifts making themselves available at any time day or night.

They act as crisis intervention coordinators and therapists after just 20 hour training which involves working with law enforcement, the local hospital, ARMC, and other leading agencies associated with violence.

CrossRoads started back in 1976 by a hand full of women volunteers. There were no cell phones or pagers so when they took the crisis line they stayed home for one week at a time and answered the phone.

WFMY News 2's Liz Crawford met some of the CrossRoads volunteers Tuesday night at a forum where they discussed their roles with the district attorney, law enforcement, and a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner.

Lauren Berk is one of the volunteers. She's also a student at Elon. She told News 2 that helping the victims has been very rewarding.

"I think it's been incredible to see the resiliency in survivors. They have been through....this has been the hardest part of their entire life. This is the darkest part of their lives. There have been victims who have experienced the absolute worst,"said Berk.

"Seeing the look of despair on people's faces and you never forget the look on someone's face when they're really hurting. That sort of imprints on you and you never forget that," added Bonnie Field, another CrossRoads volunteer.
