Raleigh, NC-- State troopers are investigating the hit-and-run death of a child who was struck by a tractor-trailer after getting off a Sampson County school bus.
The N.C. Highway Patrol said Tuesday that the bus was headed south on U.S. 421 and had stopped with all of its emergency equipment activated. As the student got off, a tractor trailer hauling timber and also traveling south on U.S. 421 passed the stopped school bus and hit the child. The tractor trailer continued on.
Sgt. Jeff Gordon said the tractor-trailer and the driver were later located near the town of Autryville.
The driver Johnny Allen Spell is charged with Felony Passing a Stop School Bus, Felony Hit & Run, Involuntary Manslaughter, and Driving While Impaired While Operating a Commercial Motor Vehicle.
Spell who's from Roseboro, NC is currently in the Sampson County Jail under a $200,000 bond.
