Elon, NC -- Elon University has decided to keep Chick-fil-A on campus, according to Elon Local News.

The school's decision follows the national controversy surrounded by the restaurant franchise which led to several colleges and universities rejecting their presence on their campuses.

Elon University appointed a Vendor Policy Study Committee to spark the conversation and help decide the next course of action. The committee was overwhelmed by the response of the Elon student body and Elon's LGBTQIA (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, queer/questioning, intersex and allies) alliance and awareness organization.

The campus also came up with a system to confront incidents of bias and discrimination.

Elon University offered same-sex partner benefits to their employees and recently opened a LGBTQIA resource room, according to an email by Jeff Stein on behalf of the Board of Trustees.

Elon University has come to the following decision about Chick-fil-A:

  • There's no actionable cause to remove Chick-fil-A from campus. Elon's food service is part of a contract with Aramark not Chick-fil-A.
  • There has been no evidence of discrimination or complaints about Chick-fil-A on campus.
  • Universities should be places to promote the free and open exchange of ideas.
  • Chick-fil-A, its owners, and the Winshape Foundation has modified their previous positions and stepped away from taking political stands on gay rights issues.
