Greensboro, NC -- Cone Health and Alamance Regional Medical Center will go ahead with plans to merge after getting the approval from the Federal Trade Commission. It should become a done deal taking effect May 1, 2013.

The merger means Alamance Regional Medical Center will become the sixth hospital to join Cone Health's network.

Tim Rice, Cone Health Chief Executive Officer said it's an opportunity for growth.

"Our merger is a positive step for the future of both health systems. But more importantly, it is great news for people throughout this region who will, over time, have access to a broader range of high-quality, expert medical care" said Rice.

Over the next couple of months both hospitals will work together to determine the logistics of fusing the two organizations.

John Currin, Jr., Alamance Regional Medical Center President said it's shows a renewed commitment to the community to better provide medical care.

"Our goal is to continue to grow services locally and find ways to make our community a better place to live. The increased resources available to us as a result of the merger and our joint devotion to high-quality care will benefit patients greatly,"said Currin.

The merger was first announced in December 2011.
