Greensboro, NC -- Protecting your personal information should be at the top of any person's priority list. But for North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper, it's not just his priority to protect our personal information, its his job.

Cooper joined 2 Wants to Know's Tanya Rivera at the 2 Wants to Know Shred-a-Thon at the Four Seasons Town Center in Greensboro. He sees and hears identity theft complaints daily-- and is working to stop schemers. North Carolina is 25th in the nation for identity theft, so when people think it's not really happening here, Cooper knows differently.

Among the tips he offers consumers, he says people should be extra careful and guard their personal information. Never carry or give out your Social Security card or your social security number.

Here's a tip Cooper offered that you may not be aware of: you can stop those pre-approved credit card applications from coming to your house! You can stop them by calling 1-888-5-OPT-OUT or by clicking here.

His website also says people should consider a free security freeze. Placing security freezes on your credit prevents identity thieves from opening new accounts or taking out credit cards and loans in your name. But be warned, if you want to open a new account in your own name, you would need to lift the freeze, for a small fee.
