Winston-Salem, NC -- Joseph M. Hester, a Forsyth County Schools teacher, is facing sex offenses charges for having an inappropriate relationship with a student.
Winston-Salem police said they received a call from administrators at Glenn High School that a teacher was possibly involved in an inappropriate relationship with a 15-year-old female student.
Hours later, police arrested 24-year-old Joseph M. Hester and charged him with:
- One Count of Indecent Liberties with a Student
- One Count of Statutory Sex Offense
- One Count of Indecent Liberties with a Child
He is in the Forsyth County Detention Center under a $ 500,000 bond.
Theo Helm, a spokesperson for Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools, said Hester is a first year teacher who teaches science at Glenn High.
"On the one hand, it should be common sense that you don't have a relationship with a student. Beyond that, it's something we educate teachers and employees about," Helm said.
Winston-Salem Police Lieutenant Rob Cozart added, "You understand that teenagers and children will make mistakes and show a lapse in judgment. It's the responsibility of the adult to make the proper decisions and to do the right thing in a situation. Obviously, in this situation, the adult made the wrong decision."
Investigators said no other victims have been identified at this point in the investigation. However, the case remains open while police continue to investigate.
