Winston-Salem, NC -- The scene is clear and everyone is safe after authorities found a suspicious piece of luggage at the finish line of Saturday's Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

Lt. Elwood Craven told WFMY News 2 a Salem College public safety officer noticed the luggage in a trash can near the finish line on Salem Avenue. Craven says the package must have been placed there because officers checked every cardboard trash can prior to the event and didn't see anything suspicious.

Winston-Salem police called in their Hazardous Device Disposal Team, which was already on duty and on standby for the event, around 10:30 a.m.

Winston-Salem and campus police evacuated the area as a precaution. There were around 2,000 to 3,000 people in the area when police found the luggage.

Craven says the team used a special device to blow open the luggage, which gave off a sound similar to a single gunshot.

Once police were able to safely look inside the package, they found it was empty.

Police cleared the scene and race organizers and participants were allowed to return to the area around 11:30 a.m.

UPDATE: Upon further investigation, police found that the luggage was a damaged carrying case. One of the event's third-party vendors threw it in the trash and left the event. Police have closed their investigation and ruled this a non-criminal act.
