Asheboro, NC -- A two-year-old boy accidentally shot himself Saturday after finding a gun in his home. On Monday, the Randolph County Sheriff's Office told WFMY News 2, the boy was in stable condition and recovering from the incident.

Deputies say the accident happened around 2 p.m. at 711 Spring Valley Road, just outside Asheboro city limits. The boy's father immediately rushed him to Randolph Hospital. He was later transferred to Brenner Children's Hospital.

According to investigators, the two-year-old found the gun in his parents' bedroom and put it in his mouth. Then, the gun went off.

The boy's mother, father and three siblings were home at the time of the accident. The sheriff's office is not releasing the boy's name, but say his parents are Jose Palencia and Agelica Rameriez.

A Randolph County Sheriff Investigator told WFMY News 2 charges will be filed against one or both of the parents. However, investigators have not yet determined when that will happen. Storing an unsecured firearm in a place where minors can access it is a misdemeanor in North Carolina. The punishment can range from probation to jail time.

Neighbor James Young said, "This is a good family. There is not a bunch of mess that goes on around here. There are good people around here and it's just a tragic accident. You can look back and say a lot of things should have been done differently, but it's not going to change anything."
