Lexington, NC -- The Rockingham County Sheriff's Department took to the water to remind people about water safety this Memorial Day weekend.
They regularly patrol Lake Bewels, but after Saturday's fatal boating accident on High Rock Lake, authorities really wanted to drive home the need for safety.
Sheriff Sam Page says because there are all types of crafts on the water from jet skis to pontoon boats everyone should be alert and watch out for each other. He also says you should wear a personal flotation device at all times, whether legally required to wear one or not. That's because if you are thrown off the watercraft and are unconscious it could save your life.
Sheriff Page told boaters they are not there to write tickets but are there to ensure all boaters make it home safe.
