Winston-Salem, NC -- Police say a pedestrian is missing after a car hit him on U.S. 52 South Sunday morning.
Police interviewed the driver just south of Akron Drive around 1 a.m. He told investigators he was heading south on U.S. 52 when a man walked out in front of his vehicle.
The driver tried to stop his car but couldn't do so before hitting the pedestrian.
The driver told police he didn't have a phone, so he ran to Akron Drive after the accident to get help as the victim was lying on the side of the road.
When the driver returned to the scene, the victim was gone, but he did leave a shoe where he had be lying.
Detectives found damage on the front of the driver's car and a small amount of blood at the scene.
Winston-Salem police searched the area using the K-9 unit and Forsyth County blood hounds but were unable to find the victim. Officers even returned to the scene after sunrise and still had no success finding the man.
Police say local hospitals have not taken in any victims who might have been hit by a vehicle.
