Greensboro, NC -- Greensboro Police are investigating after they say a pedestrian was killed Wednesday morning along I-40 East/Business 85 near Martin Luther King Boulevard.
Police said the accident happened shortly after 5 am.
Thomas Robert Emerson, 57, was driving his Ford Taurus when he went off the road and hit Raeshawn Lamont Perry, 22, who was walking along the shoulder, according to police. Perry died at the location of the accident.
Emerson was taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
He is charged with misdemeanor Death By Motor Vehicle; police said he may face additional charges. Emerson will have to take a blood toxicology test, which is a standard practice in these types of accidents, to determine if he was under the influence of any substances. Police said they don't believe alcohol was a factor.
All lanes on I-40 East are now open. All eastbound lanes were closed so police could measure the interstate, which they said is part of their investigation. One lane was closed for about four hours.
