Guilford County, N.C. -- Billy Yow, a former Guilford County Commissioner, suffered a head injury Thursday evening and has been in critical condition. A family friend, Alan Perdue tells WFMY News 2 doctors removed a ventilator from Yow late Friday.

Yow is recovering from a drilling incident at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

Greensboro City Councilman Tony Wilkins told WFMY News 2 that Yow had surgery early Friday morning and is still unconscious. Wilkins says he is very optimistic about Yow's recovery.

Wilkins said that Yow was hurt at a job site in Colfax at about 5:30 pm. He was hit on the head above the right eye.

Yow sustained multiple face fractures and is being monitored closely for head injury, according to a family friend. His condition will continue to be monitored.

Sheriff B.J. Barnes said, "Billy's a fighter. He's going to hang in there. I think the family would appreciate anyone and everyone's prayers for him."

Republican Party volunteer Theresa Yon said, "It's so hard to believe because he's larger than life. He's wonderful. Everybody loves to hear what he has to say, whether they disagree or agree."

Guilford County Republican Party Executive Director Justin Conrad said, "Billy, has impacted a whole lot of lives, our thoughts and prayers are with Billy."

Neighbors and community members signed a card for Yow Friday at the Republican Headquarters on West Market Street in Greensboro.

Yow owns a well drilling company.
