Raleigh, NC -- A bill requiring North Carolina educators to teach that abortions are linked to later premature births is headed to the full House.

A House panel endorsed the measure Tuesday. The bill would go to Gov. Pat McCrory for final approval if it passes the House.

The measure requires students in grades seven and higher to learn about the risk factors associated with premature birth. It originally included only abortion but was amended to include other factors such as smoking.

Democrats unsuccessfully tried to leave the factors taught up to a teacher's discretion and insert the word "risk" in place of "cause."   Supporters and opponents dispute the scientific basis for linking abortion to premature birth.

The House committee approved the measure 13-7.
