Mount Airy, N.C. -- Efforts to straighten a curve on N.C. Highway 89 are forcing motorists to take a 40-mile detour.
The work is part of a project to straighten a sharp curve that the N.C. Department of Transportation considers to be dangerous. The department says that portion of road has seen a high accident rate, especially for large trucks trying to navigate the curve. Blasting was to get under way Thursday morning and continue through Friday evening.
Westbound motorists traveling between Low Gap and the Virginia state line will have to use N.C. 89 to Interstate 77 North into Virginia. They will then take Exit 14 onto U.S. 221/58 toward Galax, Va., then head south on VA 89 into North Carolina.
The project is expected to be completed by November 2014.
