Eden, N.C. -- The City of Eden is remembering its mayor, John E. Grogan, who died on Thursday at the age of 78 after a courageous fight with cancer. Grogan served for the city for nearly 28 years. He was in the process of wrapping up his eighth year as mayor. He also served 20 years an Eden City Councilman.
Eden's City Manager, Brad Corcoran said he will be missed.
"It has truly been an honor and privilege to work beside Mayor Grogan for so many years. I can tell you that he loved this community with a passion and the City has sustained a great loss."
Grogan has received many honors including: Eden's Citizen of the Year, Wal-Mart Community Citizenship Award, Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow, recipient of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine - one of the highest honors a Governor can bestow on a North Carolina citizen.
Visitation will be held Sunday from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at the Morehead House next to Fair Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Monday at 3:00 p.m. at Leaksville United Methodist Church, followed by an inurnment at Overlook cemetery in Eden.
The family is asking in lieu of flowers for memorial contributions to be made to the Good Samaritan Project fund at the Morehead Memorial Hospital Foundation, a charitable organization providing financial assistance and access to health care for the most needy, at 117 E. Kings Hwy, Eden, NC 27288.
