Reidsville, NC -- One person is dead after a shooting at a Reidsville business Monday morning.
The shooting happened at Hall Well & Plumbing on Flat Rock Road, around 3:20 am.
Sheriff Page told WFMY News 2 two people were attempting to break into the business when the security alarm went off.
Steve Hall, the property owner and vice president of the business, saw two men pushing rolls off copper wire in his backyard - near the shop, according to the sheriff's office. They said he confronted the men and told them to stop. But, one of the suspects, Jesse Ray Walker, charged at Hall. Hall shot and killed Walker.
The second suspect, Brandon Joe Hanks, ran away, but deputies later arrested him at his home.
Hanks was charged with Felony Breaking and Entering, Felony Larceny and Felony Possession of Stolen Property. He was placed in the Rockingham County Detention Facility under a $75,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court July 22.
No charges have been filed against Hall. Deputies said he acted in self-defense. Hall may be protected under North Carolina's Castle Doctrine. To learn more about the law, click here. The District Attorney will ultimately decide whether Hall will face any charges.
Sheriff Page said, "When they believe somebody is trying to cause serious, bodily harm, they do have a right to protect themselves and defend themselves."
Deputies said the value of the copper Walker and Hanks attempted to steal was valued at $4,940.
Last Tuesday, Sheriff Page said the business was robbed three times since March. About $1,600 worth of copper wiring was missing during the most recent robbery. This prompted the business owners to offer a $500 reward with information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever was responsible for the thefts.
The Hall family was already planning on installing a larger security fence on Monday, before this incident happened.
