Asheboro, NC - A baby gorilla, born last weekend, has died.
The North Carolina Zoo announced Wednesday the infant died Tuesday night.
The exact cause of death is unknown, but they said it is likely the baby boy's mother, Acacia, rolled over on him while sleeping. The baby did not yet have a name.
Zoo staff found the baby dead during a round-the-clock inspection; the mother was still holding the baby in her arms.
A report from the zoo said the baby seemed healthy Tuesday morning and was feeding and drinking.
The baby's arrival into the world was difficult for the mother, according to the zoo. They said veterinarians had to perform a caesarean section on Accacia because she was having a hard time while in labor. The baby was, however, delivered successfully.
The zoo said this was the third gorilla birth at the NC Zoo since August 2012. On average, only five gorillas are born in all US zoos in a year.
