Statesville, NC-- Police in Statesville have arrested a man who is accused of hitting a woman with his car on Friday night. Officers arrested Richard Turner, 55, Sunday at his house on North Tradd Street.

He is charged with Felony Hit and Run and Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill.

Officers say they received a call to Garfield Street around 7:30 p.m. on Friday after an assault was reported. Witnesses told police a couple was taking a walk and a driver (Turner) hit the woman with his car.

They say Turner then got out of the car and started chasing the woman's husband, threatening him with a knife. A group of young men playing basketball nearby was given credit for helping the couple and keeping the attack from being worse.

Police were told the woman, who was taken to a local hospital and was later released, had once dated Turner.

Turner is in Iredell County Detention Center without bond.
