Greensboro, NC -- Two developers in Greensboro are looking to add to the downtown skyline. Friday, Roy Carroll announced his plans to build a hotel near Eugene Street and Lindsay Street.
Another possible venue coming downtown was one of the reasons he cited for wanting to build the hotel. "The Greensboro Performing Arts Center has influenced my decision to look into building a hotel in Greensboro," Carroll said.
Carroll says construction could start as early as 2014, on property he already owns in that area.
Not to be out done...developer, Randall Kaplan confirms he is working with Wyndham Hotels and Resorts on a multi-million-dollar hotel in the heart of downtown.
City leaders feel these kinds of developments are needed and will only help lure events and other companies to come to Greensboro.
"These investments are validating the things that have been put in place and the direction that community is going in for some time and it is becoming a reality," said Pat Danahy, Greensboro Partnership.
"If you have additional hotels, we are going to have more hotel/motel tax, which is thus more that we have to cover any of our budget and operations of upgrades for the facilities and paying for the facilities in general," said Zack Matheny, Greensboro City Council Member.
Matheny added that two hotels means lots of jobs for people here in the area. And he wants residents to think bigger, as the community grows.
"I think sometimes Greensboro, we don't think big enough and we've got in downtown Greensboro, Lincoln National, Wrangler, huge corporations, you've got more corporations to consider. You got Performing Arts Center, you got Mose Cone and the Cone Health group and sometime in Greensboro, we don't allow ourselves to think big enough. In my case, I'm looking at new hotels; I can't believe it hasn't been done before," said Matheny.
