WENTWORTH, N.C. -- The Department of Social Services in Rockingham County has assembled a team dedicated to fighting public assistance fraud.
DSS announced Thursday, Detective Mike Smith, with the sheriff's office; Wendy Yates, a program integrity investigator; and Lynn Wagoner, a public integrity administrative support, have all teamed to work with the Public Integrity Office.
Five counties across the state have an office that provides similar services.
DSS stated 10 percent of people receiving public assistance abuse the program. They noted offenses have been reported in grocery store check-out lines by food stamp abusers.
WFMY News 2's Faith Abubey will have more on this story in the Thursday evening newscasts.
