MEBANE, N.C. -- Candy manufacturing and jobs are coming to Mebane.
Morinaga & Co. Ltd., a Japanese candy manufacturer, will open its first U.S. plant in Mebane, according to an Orange County spokesperson. The plant is expected to create 90 jobs within the next three years.
The planned site for the 120,000 square-foot plant is in the Buckhorn Economic Development District. Morinaga will invest $48 million into the facility.
Salaries were described as competitive, and will be an average of more than $38,000 annually.
Morinaga was founded in 1899 in Tokyo. They manufacture a fruit-flavored snack called Hi-Chew, which is a top seller in Japan.
Orange County incentives to Morinaga will be discussed at a county commissioners meeting this fall.
