Stokesdale, NC -- NC State Highway Patrol confirms a man died after he crashed a dump truck he was driving Tuesday afternoon.
The accident happened on NC Highway 68 North in Stokesdale, near Prince Edward Road, at 3:34 p.m. Trooper David Key said a car, traveling north on NC Highway 68 stopped to make a left turn, and a dump truck traveling behind the truck slammed on brakes to avoid hitting the car.
When the driver of the dump truck did that, he ran off the road, causing the dump truck to flip and roll over several times. The driver of the truck was identified at 66-year-old James Lemmie White Jr., of Stoneville, NC.
White was pronounced dead at Cone Hospital, Trooper Key said. The dump truck, which was loaded with dirt was the only vehicle involved in the crash.
Trooper Key said officers don't believe White saw the car until it was too late, and he reacted quicker than needed to stop the truck safely.
