GREENSBORO -- The Greensboro Fire Department helped the community honor the firefighters and police officers who lost their lives saving others on Sept. 11, 2001.

The third annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb was a symbolic event, honoring first responders and collecting donations for the Marine Corps. Reserve "Toys for Tots" program.

The fire department welcomed the community to climb the steps of the Bellemeade parking deck in downtown Greensboro Saturday morning.

Participants climbed the deck nine times, representing 73 flights of stairs. The climb represented the highest floor of the World Trade Center reached by NYFD firefighters on Sept. 11.

In all, 343 firefighters and 72 police officers died in the attacks at the World Trade Center. Organizers say Saturday's event was a great way to honor them and give back to the community.
