New iPhones and iOS 7 team up for winning combo

It's perfectly reasonable to assume that anyone thinking about buying a new iPhone when the latest devices hit retail on Friday would focus on the hardware itself, especially with Apple trotting out two new models. But the biggest change to come to the iPhone arrives with iOS 7, the operating system at the heart of the newest handsets. As of today, it can also be downloaded to freshen up the iPhone 4, iPhone 4S and the now discontinued iPhone 5 as well as some iPads and the iPod Touch.

Navy Yard shooter reported hearing voices through walls

The life of Aaron Alexis, the 34-year-old civilian Navy contractor who killed 12 people Monday at the Washington Navy Yard, friends, law enforcement and military officials say, was an odd combination of Buddhist calm and paranoia, friendliness and sudden rage. Alexis' paranoia was in full display again as recently as last month. He complained to police in Newport, R.I., about hearing voices speaking to him through the ceiling of his hotel room, seeking to penetrate his body with vibrations from a "microwave machine" to prevent him from sleeping. He told officers that he had no history of mental illness in his family.

Police seek 2 armed robbers who took Ga. teen from home

Georgia authorities are seeking two armed robbers who kidnapped a 14-year-old girl during a home invasion early Tuesday after her mother told them she didn't have money or jewelry. A statewide AMBER Alert was issued for Ayvani Hope Perez of Ellenwood, Ga., outside Atlanta. She is 4 feet, 9 inches tall, weighs 93 pounds and was last seen wearing blue-and-gray Star Wars pajamas and a blue-and-gray "Super Hero" shirt.

Cher rips Miley's dancing, song, physique, oral hygiene

The hyperactive, sexual performance with Robin Thicke was "so bad," says the famously outspoken diva, 67. "I'm not old-fashioned," Cher tells USA TODAY in an interview to promote new album Closer to the Truth. "She could have come out naked, and if she'd just rocked the house, I would have said, 'You go, girl.' It just wasn't done well. She can't dance, her body looked like hell, the song wasn't great, one cheek was hanging out. And, chick, don't stick out your tongue if it's coated."

Zac Efron completed stint in rehab, reports say

Online gossips are reporting that Zac Efron quietly completed a stint in rehab earlier this year, but is clean and sober now. TMZ is reporting, citing multiple unnamed sources, that his treatment, completed about five months ago, was for "cocaine addiction." And possibly he also may have dabbled in "Molly," the lately-in-the-news pure form of Ecstasy popular at clubs and raves.

Bonus! Big day for Fed

It's an important day for the Federal Reserve with financial markets fixated on the central bank's expected decision to dial down its bond-buying stimulus. Fed policymakers also could make other significant moves.
