FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- About 600 troops from Fort Bragg will be heading to Afghanistan next year to assist in the troop reduction there.
The Fayetteville Observer reports that Maj. Gen. Jeffrey Colt said Tuesday 500 soldiers from the 18th Airborne Corps will advise and assist coalition troops remaining in Afghanistan during the troop drawdown. The corps did similar work during the troop reductions in Iraq in 2011 and 2012.
The troops are to deploy in February.
About 100 other Fort Bragg soldiers from the 82nd Sustainment Brigade will also be deploying to Afghanistan next year, replacing a unit from Fort Hood, Texas.
By late winter, the 62,000 American troops in Afghanistan will be reduced by half.
