WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Thursday, there is planned meeting for homeowners and renters in a Winston-Salem area where Walmart is interested in locating a store.

Some of those who live near the location site told WFMY News 2 they plan to fight the proposed Walmart Neighborhood Market.

WFMY's Chad Silber looked at the pros and cons of big box stores moving into your neighborhood.

The area sits just east of the intersection of Country Club Road and Meadowlark Drive. It would be built next to Brookberry Park Apartments, not far from Meadowlark Elementary and Middle Schools.

The store would not be a Supercenter, just a grocery story and pharmacy. Of course, a lot of people are excited about the idea, while others are trying to stop the project.

People against the project say traffic is their number one concern. One woman we spoke with says it's so congested at the end of the school day, she needs to go there an hour early just to be on time.
Some people also wonder why another grocery store is proposed when there is a Harris Teeter just a mile and a half up the road.

On the other side of the debate -- jobs. Walmart reps tell us the store will create 90 new jobs once it's built, however the economic impact is not known. People also say they're excited about a cheaper option for groceries.

To be clear, the area was zoned for a shopping center back in 1998 but no stores showed enough interest. Now, the area will have to be rezoned to build the Walmart Neighborhood Market at a smaller size. We're told it will be about 8,000 square feet smaller.

You can voice your opinion at a city council meeting, Thursday night in Winston-Salem. It starts at 6:30p.m. at Meadowlark Middle School in Winston-Salem.
