CONNELLY SPRINGS, N.C. -- Two children died in a Burke County house fire Thursday morning.
A trooper with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol is recovering from smoke inhalation after trying to help rescue family members.
WBTV is reporting that the children were 6 and 11 years old.
Chief George Hildebran told the station that all of the doors and windows of the house on Old Laurel Road were engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.
Firefighters say 10 people were inside the house when the fire started. Several escaped before firefighters arrived.
The flames prevented a state trooper and several firefighters from going inside the bedroom where the children were found.
The state trooper, who tried to help in the rescue, was taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.
