ASHEVILLE, N.C.-- Police have reopened a section of New Leicester Highway following a break-in and officer-involved shooting that claimed the suspect's life this morning.

Police closed New Leicester Highway from Heritage Drive to Evelake Drive to conduct the investigation.

But early this afternoon, police reopened both southbound lanes and one northbound lane,

After a break-in was reported at about 7:30 this morning at a residence near the Meadows Apartments, an Asheville officer chased the suspect on foot, Asheville police chief William Anderson said at the scene.

The officer shot and killed the male suspect after shots were fired that did not come from the officer, Anderson said. No one else was injured, and no other suspects are at large, the chief said.

Anderson said investigators were still trying to confirm the identity of the dead man. The chief said he could not released the name of the officer who fired the fatal shot.

SBI officers were on the scene investigating.
