WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Applications for the Salvation Army's Christmas gift program opened Monday for Winston-Salem and Greensboro, and organizers said they are prepared to accommodate large crowds.

With the program, low-income families who meet certain criteria can apply to receive free Christmas gifts--one large gift and one small gift per child.

WFMY News 2 spoke with Salvation Army communications director Ellen Bliven and Winston-Salem area commander major James Allison Monday.  They confirmed every applicant who meets the criteria will receive gifts, and it does not matter whether applicants apply on the first day versus the last day of the application period.  Bliven recommended that people do not come out on the first application day, if they do not want to wait in long lines.

Applications must be submitted in person.  The Salvation Army suggests applicants check with their local Salvation Army locations about the application criteria, as it is not the same for all locations.  To the Winston-Salem location, applicants must bring:

  • a photo ID
  • proof of custody and official birth dates of every child (birth certificates, official school transcripts)
  • clothing sizes for all children in the home who are 12 years and younger, a copy of *all* monthly income and expenses for everyone in the household, proof of all income in the home (including food stamps, SSI and WIC)
  • the name, age and sex of every child in the household ages 12 and younger

To receive toys, children must be born by Dec. 16, 2013 or be 12 years old or younger on the date of the application's submission.

Major Allision said in the coming weeks, the Salvation Army will be looking for volunteers to assist with putting gifts together and ringing holiday collection bells.

Applications are open in Winston-Salem from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from Sept. 30 through Oct. 5.  Applications are open in Greensboro from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Sept. 30 through Oct. 11.
