GASTONIA, N.C. (AP) - A Gaston County health care company is warning 1,300 patients that some of their information was sent in an unsecure email. CaroMont Health told The Gaston Gazette that the email was discovered during a routine security audit and they have no reason to believe the information was seen by anyone other than the person sending and the person receiving the email.
The email included names, dates of birth, addresses diagnoses, medications and other information for more than 1,300 patients. Federal privacy laws require medical provides to use strict security rules when emails medical information, and CaroMont Health spokeswoman Dallas Paddon says those rules were not followed in this email.
CaroMont says it is notifying people whose information was in the email and retraining workers on privacy rules.
