THOMASVILLE, N.C. -- Thomasville police said someone poured gasoline on a woman then set her on fire. It happened Monday night around 7:30 p.m.

Police said the victim is at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center with serious injuries. Her two teenage daughters witnessed the assault, but neither of them were harmed, police said.

"There's been some bad domestics but never involving the use of gas and fire that I can recall," said Captain Darren Smith with Thomasville Police.

WFMY News 2's Liz Crawford spoke to neighbors on Leach Avenue. Almost twenty-four hours later, they were still talking about the horror that shook the neighborhood on Monday night.

Police said they've been called to the house a few times for domestic disputes, but neighbors tell a different story. Neighbors said the couple would fight loudly and violently a few times a week.

"Anytime I've witnessed anything it's been female on male. I know that's uncommon," said Mark Farlow. Farlow lives across the street. One of the daughters rushed to his house for help.

"It's just disheartening, you know, I have two kids of my own and I just can't imagine them ever witnessing anything like that," added Farlow.

Police told me one of the daughters ran for help immediately. The other one tried to break up the fight before her mother finally told her to leave the house.

The victim's husband, Portugal Byas, has been charged with Attempted Murder and First Degree Arson in the incident. Officers said the victim and her husband were in a domestic dispute when it happened. The children ran to get help.

The woman is currently listed in critical condition.
