New Hanover Co. Deputy Shot During Investigation

WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) -- A New Hanover County Sheriff's deputy is recovering after he was shot during an investigation. Sheriff Ed McMahon says Detective Michael Spencer was shot in the leg at around noon Thursday.

Sgt. Jerry Brewer says Spencer and another Gang Task Force member went to speak with a suspicious man they saw get out of a car. Brewer says the man started shooting when he saw Spencer and the other officer following him.

Authorities said Spencer appears to have suffered non-life-threatening injuries and should recover.No arrests have been made.
