HIGH POINT, N.C. -- WFMY News 2 learns about the impact Coach Hatchell has on young women from a parent of a current player.

Sylvia Hatchell is a Lady Tar Heel legend on and off the basketball court. Now, she won't be on the sidelines for the first time in 28 years.

Hatchell was diagnosed with leukemia and is temporarily stepping away from her coaching responsibilities on the court. She'll receive treatment from the UNC Cancer Center while she remains involved in day-to-day coaching operations.

Megan Buckland is a red-shirt sophomore on the Carolina women's basketball team. She and her teammates found out about Coach Hatchell's diagnosis yesterday. Megan's parents didn't learn of it until Monday morning, when they received a text message from an assistant coach.

The Buckland family told WFMY News 2's Liz Crawford that they've known Sylvia Hatchell for years. A picture of Megan and Coach is displayed on their mantle. The picture shows Megan at a camp when she was in the 6th grade with coach. Now, the High Point native is a Tar Heel through and through.

This past March we caught up with Megan at the A-C-C Tournament. Here's what she said about her beloved Coach Hatchell:

"She's a great lady. She's knows so much about basketball. She has so much wisdom and knowledge about the sport and I mean I learn something new every day from her it seems like."

Megan's mom told WFMY News 2 that Coach Hatchell uses an expression, "holding the rope". She tells her players to hold the rope for one another during adversity.

"We know that she has a battle to face in front of her but each and every one of us whether it's a player, a coach, a supporter of UNC women's basketball, a parent, we all are holding the rope for you Coach Hatchell," said Tammy Buckland, Megan's mom.

Here's something Megan tweeted on Monday:

we fight for each other as a team and we stay together through thick and thin...greatness is brought about from adversity #holdtherope
