WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Police in Winston-Salem have arrested the man who they say sexually assaulted a teenage autistic girl at a public library.

Investigators charged Edward Boone Davis, 51, with Second Degree Rape on Wednesday for the incident reported Monday evening at Forsyth County Public Library.

The girl's mother said she saw her 19-year-old daughter being sexually assaulted in one of the book aisles. Police said the woman fought Davis, but he ran away.

Investigators stress the Forsyth County Library is a safe place to be, if you do your part. "As individuals, we need to be vigilant of everywhere that we are," said Winston-Salem Lt. Catrina Thompson. "Unfortunately, while we have a lot of good people, we do have some people that are out to take advantage of situations."

Library staff  tell us they have at least two security guards on duty at all times. They also have 14 surveillance cameras running around the clock to keep an eye on activity inside the building.

They admit, they can't see everything so they rely on parents to help protect the youngest readers.

"If you bring your children in, just be safe," said Roscoe Newkirk, who works for library security. "Watch them, keep them with you and just be aware of your surroundings."

Parents say it can be a challenge to constantly keep an eye on your child while at the library. "The way libraries are laid out with aisles, it's like you could be in the next aisle and anything could happen so you've got to keep them in sight," said Sherry Cochrane, a parent who uses the library regularly.

We still don't know where the mother and daughter were standing but we do know the mother was browsing for books in a different section from her daughter.

Police did not release Davis' photo. He was taken to jail under a $750,000 bond. His court date is scheduled for Nov. 7.

Davis was charged with sexual battery, last year. When police charged him with this crime Wednesday, he was already in jail on an outstanding warrant
