SALISBURY, N.C. -- A high school student in Rowan County was hit by a car Thursday morning while waiting for the school bus and died.
Troopers identified the West Rowan High School student as 17-year-old MaKinzy Jordan Smith, according to WBTV.
WBTV reports the incident happened in the 6000 block of Woodleaf Road. Investigators say the student was fatally struck by the car while crossing the street in front of the stopped school bus.
A witness told WBTV that the bus had its stop arm extended and lights flashing.
Troopers charged the driver of the car, Barbara Harrison Smith, with Felony Passing a Stopped School Bus. It was unclear if additional charges are pending.
The students on the bus and the driver saw it happen. Another bus took them to school.
The road was closed for several hours while emergency crews were working.
