WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Officials with Wake Forest University and its associated hospital are raising $1 billion over the next five years to carry out their missions.

Officials said Friday the university will invest $600 million in initiatives including $190 million for student scholarships and debt relief. The school has reached about $315 million of that goal in the fundraising effort called "Wake Will: The Campaign for Wake Forest."

Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center has raised more than $133 million toward its $400 million goal. The hospital plans to launch its campaign publicly when it has raised $200 million.

Wake Forest University hopes also to pay more than $130 million for endowed faculty chairs and other teaching improvements and more than $280 million for buildings, student programming and faculty.
