ASHEBORO, N.C. - A Ramseur man is accused of stealing a car, running over the witness to the crime, and leaving the scene.
Asheboro police responded to a hit and run accident on Lakeview Road around 6:20 Tuesday morning. Officers found Rolando Morales lying in a ditch with a head injury.
Police say Morales witnessed Jorge Antonio Hernandez-Rivera stealing a family member's Dodge Durango. Police say there was some sort of altercation between Morales and Hernandez-Rivera which resulted in Morales getting hit by the SUV.
Police say they found the SUV on Glovinia Street but it was empty. Police processed the vehicle and conducted interviews which led them to believe Hernandez-Rivera is responsible for these crimes.
Police have secured warrants for Felony Larceny of a Motor Vehicle, Assault with a Deadly Weapon Inflicting Serious injury, and Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle.
Police say Hernandez-Rivera has an extensive criminal record and has just recently been released from prison for being a Habitual Felon.
Morales was flown to Chapel Hill, however the extent of his injuries are unknown.
