BURLINGTON, N.C. -- The city of Burlington's Water Resources Department says neighbors living near a ruptured water line will need to boil their water until further notice.

City crews have repaired and disinfected the water line on Mebane Street between Piedmont Way and Beaumont Avenue. Those living on the east, by South Beaumont Avenue, and on the west, by Piedmont Way and north by Georgia Avenue, will need to boil water.

City leaders say you should not drink the water without first boiling it. You must bring all water to a boil, let it boil for one minute, and let it cool before using, or use bottle water.

Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water. You can contact the EPA Safe Drinking Water Hotline for more information at (800) 426-4791.

City officials will notify you after analyzing water samples for contamination about when to stop boiling water.
