GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Investigators with the Department of Motor Vehicles say a Triad car salesman duped and victimized nearly 30 people by rolling back odometers on cars he sold to them.

They say there might be even more victims out there.

According to the DMV, the scheme happened between 2011 and April of this year. Investigators say a victim came forward in August and as they started looking into the complaint, they found not only did Victor Lane Royster tamper with the mileage on about 28 vehicles; he also then defrauded the buyers by charging them more than the vehicles were worth.

The 53-year-old was arrested Thursday night but has since posted bail.

WFMY News 2 found Royster at his business called Lane Auto Sales in Greensboro Friday afternoon. He declined an on-camera interview but told WFMY News 2's Faith Abubey he was not directly involved in the scheme.

Royster claims it happened while he was a salesman with another company at the same location as his current business.

He says he knew the illegal activity was going on but he never participated.

The DMV has charged Royster with 29 counts of Title Fraud, 28 felony counts of Unlawful Mileage Change, 26 counts of Obtaining Property Under False Pretense. Marge Howell, a spokesperson with DMV says Royster will likely face embezzlement charges as well.

Howell encourages car buyers to protect themselves by getting a Carfax report, requesting a vehicle history from the DMV and getting a trusted mechanic to inspect the car before buying.

If you believe you're a victim of this used car scheme, you can call investigators at the DMV's License and Theft Bureau:      (336) 256-2024.
