GREENSBORO, N.C. - A North Carolina veteran is already a hero and has already received national recognition for his work -- but he's in the running to be named "Hero of the Year."

Dale Beatty, the co-founder of Purple Heart Homes, is nominated for CNN's "Hero of the Year."

He's made it to the top 10 and if he wins, Purple Heart Homes will win $250,000.

"It's humbling and certainly an honor to be in that top 10 and we hope that everybody is voting out there just to get that $250,000 which would be a huge boost, maybe get us another project here in the Greensboro area," explained Beatty.

Beatty was in Greensboro on Veterans Day at the welcome home ceremony for Sergent Nathan Harris. His organization helped Harris get a new home.

Purple Heart Homes has completed 30 projects and is operating in 25 states.

Beatty and his "battle buddy" John Gallina started it in 2008 from their hometown of Statesville. They were both injured in Iraq in 2004.
