GRAHAM, NC -- The NC Department of Transportation is gearing up for everything from ice to snow.

WFMY News 2's Liz Crawford found that Tuesday was supposed to be a practice round for some crews but they got a taste of the real thing.

NCDOT crews in Alamance county spent all day transforming their trucks -- complete with the snow plow and salt spreader on the back.

They got all 27 trucks ready for the season. They just didn't know the season could start so soon.

With the chance of some real winter weather on the same day crews were scheduled for a dry run, they had to get things moving quicker than expected.

For a short time in Graham, the rain turned into snow flurries -- but for road crews, a few flakes are harmless.

"We didn't really worry so much. Ground temperatures still being fairly warm, you wouldn't really expect a big accumulation," said Nannette Fogleman, the Maintenance Engineer with NCDOT in Alamance County.

Fogleman said they could send out a few trucks in the overnight hours to salt if they hear reports of icy spots.

The North Carolina DOT sent this information for drivers:
-Slow down!
-Bridges and overpasses freeze first.
-Use gentle pressure when accelerating and braking to avoid skidding.
-And give some extra room between cars.
