ELON, N.C. -- Alamance County health officials placed a dog in Elon in quarantine after it fought and killed a rabid raccoon.

The Alamance County Health Department says the incident happened Nov. 2 at a home on Georgetown Drive.

The dog did not have current rabies vaccinations and is quarantined for six months.

"It is North Carolina law that cats and dogs be vaccinated against rabies," Environmental Health Director Carl Carroll said in a statement. "The first vaccination should occur when the dog or cat is 4 months of age; the second vaccination is required no more than a year later and then again every three years. Rabies vaccination protects not only your pet, but also helps to protect you and your family."

If your pet comes in contact with a rabid animal call animal control or the environmental health office at (336) 570-6367.
