REIDSVILLE, N.C. -- The son of North Carolina state Senate leader Phil Berger wants to leave the courthouse and head for Congress.

Phil Berger Jr. planned to kick off his bid for the Republican nomination for the 6th Congressional District seat on Wednesday at a middle school in Rockingham County. He wants to succeed GOP U.S. Rep. Howard Coble, who announced earlier this month his 15th term would be his last.

Berger has been the Rockingham County district attorney for the past seven years and is currently president of the North Carolina Conference of District Attorneys.

Other Republicans are expected to enter the GOP primary for the 6th District, which encompasses portions of the Triad, Triangle and several counties along the North Carolina border.
