RALEIGH, N.C. -- A Democratic state senator from Wake County says he will run for the attorney general's office in 2016.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reports State Sen. Josh Stein said his focus is on regaining his senate seat in 2014, then run for attorney general so he can use his eight years of experience as a senior deputy attorney general to work moving that office forward.

Stein is an attorney at the Raleigh office of Smith Moore Leatherwood. The 47-year-old is in his third term representing Senate District 16, which includes parts of Raleigh, Cary and Morrisville. He's also  minority whip during the current two-year legislative session.

Current Attorney General Roy Cooper is expected to run against Republican Gov. Pat McCrory in 2016. Cooper hasn't made a formal announcement.
