YADKIN COUNTY, N.C. - A school bus carrying students overturned Tuesday morning in Yadkin County.

Superintendent Dr. Todd Martin told WFMY News 2 that 21 students and the driver were on the bus. Ten of those students and the driver went to local medical facilities for treatment. Martin said the extent of their injuries were mostly scrapes and bruises. As of 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, only one student remained in the hospital.

The bus services Forbush Middle and High schools. Students that were not harmed were sent to school with their parents' consent.

Dr. Martin praised the efforts of the first-responders, "They did a fantastic job getting here in a very timely manner, securing the scene, checking out injuries and taking care of those who needed immediate care."

Assistant Principal Ida Weisner said she was particularly proud of the students. "The students did exactly what they have been told to do. They stayed calm and they remembered the main thing in an emergency is to stay calm and stay focused and not panic," Weisner said.

The accident happened after 7 a.m. on Summertime Road, near Sugartown Road. The bus flipped into a field as it was going around a curve. It was on its side before crews towed the bus.

Middle School student Austin Williams was on the bus when it crashed. "I was listening to music and I heard the bus driver tell us to hold on. I didn't know what was happening. It kind of got bumpy. Then, we hit the embankment. Next thing I know, we're going airborne. We turned over on our side," Williams said. "After we had the wreck, she said the brakes stopped working."

Yadkin County Schools says Pamela Gail Cline was driving the bus. Cline has driven buses for Yadkin County for the past 29 years. The N.C. State Highway Patrol is investigating the accident and the bus to see if there was a malfunction.

The district's transportation director says the bus is a 1998 model with 160,526 miles on it, which is within state guidelines. It passed an inspection just last week.
