ASHEBORO, N.C. -- A Randolph County Schools teacher is facing a felony charge for taking indecent liberties with a student.

Administrators began investigating after a female student reported an assault to the principal of Randleman High School. After speaking with math teacher Hazem Eldara, the district decided to fire Eldara and then report the situation to the Randolph County Sheriff's Department.

Deputies arrested Eldara at the Randolph County Schools Central Office. Prosecutors charged him with felony Indecent Liberties with a Student.

Randolph County Schools Spokesperson Tim Moody said, "It is not necessarily standard procedure to terminate a teacher under these circumstances, but in this case, we did feel like we had a significant amount of evidence to make that decision...The safety of our students and staff is paramount. We have taken every step that we feel like we need to take to make sure that the situation is resolved and the students feel safe."

According to Randleman High School's website, Eldara taught math. On his page, he wrote, "This is my 9th year at Randleman High School. Randleman High School is a very special place to me and I truly believe our motto: 'It's a great day to be a Tiger!'"

The case is still under investigation. A sheriff's department representative said investigators are still reviewing digital evidence connected to the situation.

If convicted, Eldara will likely lose his teacher's license
