Irmo, SC (WLTX) -- Irmo fire officials say two children died in an apartment fire Wednesday morning.
The fire began before 10 a.m. at the Saint Andrews Apartment Homes on Kilbrannon Drive off Interstate 26. It damaged two units.
Lexington County Coroner Harry Harman identified the children as
five-year-old Jarmaion N. Martin and his sister, one-year-old Reghin M.
Fire officials tell News19 an adult and the two children were in an
upstairs apartment when the fire started. They say he tried to rescue
the children but was unable to get them out.
"He came out the second story window, tried to make an attempt to go
back into the building but the fire had advanced so far he was not able
to," said Irmo Fire District Chief Mike Sonefeld.
Michael Shelley, ran over from the Domino's Pizza restaurant he manages next to the neighborhood.
"There were people just in shock, it's just not something that you
see, especially when you know that there are people trapped," said
Sonefeld said the complex did not have sprinklers installed. He said
the apartments were grandfathered in after regulations required
sprinkles systems, so it was not illegal for the complex to operate
He said the community did have fire walls, which prevented the fire from spreading.
A cause of the fire has not yet been released.
The Red Cross says they are assisting 13 adults and 4 children who were displaced.
