MANNS HARBOR, N.C. -- Ferries on the Hatteras-Ocracoke run are having to use a longer route as dredging work in the channel continues.

The ferry division of the N.C. Department of Transportation is citing safety concerns and lack of a deep water in the regular Hatteras Inlet channel as factors in the decision.

The alternate route is approximately 13 to 15 minutes longer than the regular route, so Hatteras-Ocracoke ferries will run on an amended schedule until further notice.

An announcement earlier this week said the ferries would take the longer route to allow the U.S. Coast Guard to place buoys in the channel.
